Moncai Vegan was founded in 2010 by business and life partners Don Jackson and Princesa Vitela.
Moncai (Gaelic for “monkey”) roots came from local organic farmers markets. This participation helped us to build relationships within the local community, including many of the region’s premier organic farmers. During this time a grassroots following sprang up that included some of our areas top doctors, fitness trainers, television personalities, and musicians. Don and Princesa were eventually invited to be private chefs. From such beginnings, it was only natural that Moncai eventually opened a brick and mortar in our favorite historical San Diego neighborhood, North Park.
Both vegans, we believe that when people feel they have to sacrifice, they are less inclined to stick to a lifestyle. However, if they know that they can feel better, look better, live and eat better, well, they’re a lot more likely to be stoked on the change and commitment to a more compassionate and healthy lifestyle. Eating vegan food should never feel like a sacrifice, but should be a celebration of tastes. Our commitment is to create amazing fresh dishes, comfort food, delicious drinks, and mind blowing desserts with the freshest local organic produce.
